The Inseam Cheat Sheet: How to Buy Pants Online When You’re 150cm

If I had a penny for every time I bought a pair of "ankle-length" pants only to find they reached my toes, I’d probably be retired on a private island by now.

Shopping for pants online when you’re 150cm (4'11") feels like a gamble. Will they fit? Will I look like a toddler in adult clothes? Will I have to pay my tailor more than I paid for the pants themselves?

Over the years, I’ve stopped guessing and started measuring. Here is exactly what I look for to ensure my pants fit perfectly from the moment they arrive.

1. The Magic Number: Knowing Your Inseam

The "Inseam" is the distance from the very top of your inner thigh to the bottom of your ankle. For us 150cm girls, this is the most important number in our lives.

  • The Petite Standard: Look for an inseam between 25 inches (63cm) and 27 inches (68cm).

  • Full Length: 27" is usually a full-length pant for me.

  • Cropped/Ankle: 24" or 25" gives that chic ankle-revealing look without the extra fabric bunching up.

2. Rise Matters (High-Waist is Life)

When you have shorter legs, you want to create the illusion of length. A High-Rise (where the waistband sits at or above your belly button) is a petite woman’s best friend. It "borrows" a bit of space from your torso and gives it to your legs. Avoid low-rise jeans—they visually cut your legs in half and make us look even shorter.

3. Check the "Model Height"

When shopping on sites like ASOS or Next, always look at the product description for the model’s height. If the model is 175cm (5'9") and the pants are ankle-length on her, they will be floor-length on you.

  • Pro Tip: If a brand doesn’t have a specific "Petite" section, look for their "7/8 length" or "Cropped" styles in the regular section. On a 150cm frame, these often fit like perfect full-length trousers!

4. Fabric Weight and "Bunching"

One thing I’ve learned the hard way: heavy, stiff denim can "swallow" a small frame. I always look for fabrics with a bit of stretch or a cleaner drape. If there is too much fabric bunching at the ankles (the "puddling" effect), it instantly draws the eye downward and highlights our height. A clean hem is your best friend.

5. Don’t Forget the Knee Position

This is something many people forget. In "Regular" pants, the knee area is placed for someone much taller. If you wear regular jeans and they feel baggy around your shins, it’s because the knee of the jeans is sitting at your mid-calf! This is why shopping from Petite Collections (like the ones I’ve curated here) is so important—the knee, the pockets, and the hips are all shifted upward to match our proportions.
